Is mail still delivered in SC during the government shutdown? Here’s what we know
As the federal government shutdown continues, some South Carolinians may be wondering whether mail delivery could be affected.
The government shutdown began Wednesday, Oct. 1, after Congress failed to pass a funding bill ahead of its midnight deadline.
Thousands of federal employees could face layoffs, food aid programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will only continue as funds allow, and air traffic controllers and military personnel will continue working without pay.
Note: On Friday, Oct. 3, around 1:30 p.m., the Senate is set to reconvene for a fourth time to vote on partisan bills to end the government shutdown. If it fails, the shutdown is anticipated to last into next week.
Here’s what to know about mail service as the shutdown lingers.
How will the shutdown impact the U.S. Postal Service?
Wondering if letters, packages and other mail will still reach your home?
Luckily, the U.S. Postal Service is self-funded, meaning that a government shutdown will not impact mail delivery in South Carolina.
In a statement released Sept. 25, ahead of the shutdown, the Postal Service said its “operations will not be interrupted in the event of a government shutdown, and all post offices will remain open for business as usual.”
USPS operates on revenue from postage, products and services rather than taxpayer dollars appropriated by Congress. As a result, post offices are not impacted by the annual federal budget process affected by a shutdown.
When is mail delivery delayed?
USPS mail delivery can be delayed for other reasons, which include weather, natural disasters, special events, and more, according to the USPS.
In Sept. 2024, USPS suspended service to areas of South Carolina due to impacts from Hurricane Helene. USPS also delayed service in Sept. 2022 because of Hurricane Ian.
On Jan. 9, 2025, post offices across the United States closed for a national day of observance to honor former President Jimmy Carter, who died in December.
In total, USPS offices will close for 11 federally observed holidays in 2025, including Columbus Day on Monday, Oct. 13, and Veterans Day on Tuesday, Nov. 11.
The USPS posts information online for residential customers and businesses about postal service disruptions.
