SC man to compete on season 4 of ‘The Floor’ on Fox. Here’s when, how to watch
A Bluffton local is stepping into the national spotlight as a contestant on Season 4 of Fox’s trivia-based game show, “The Floor.”
Hosted by actor and producer Rob Lowe, “The Floor” is a fast-paced, high-stakes trivia game show that blends brainpower with strategy. The series returns for its fourth season, themed “America Duels,” on Wednesday, Sept. 24. Season 4 will feature a new format with more twists, higher rewards and two contestants from every U.S. state.
Tim Wood, a Bluffton local, will be among the 100 contestants vying for victory this season.
Known for hosting weekly trivia nights at the Bluffton Flatbread Grill & Bar, Wood will put his knowledge to the test against a field of contestants from across the country, all competing for the grand prize of $250,000.
From Bluffton to the big leagues of trivia
Originally from Maine, Wood moved to Bluffton in 2004 for a job as general manager of the Savannah Sand Gnats, predecessor to the Savannah Bananas.
As a lifelong trivia lover, sports fan and avid game show watcher, Wood always dreamed of competing on TV, but it wasn’t until a transformative year of weight loss, health improvement and renewed confidence that everything aligned.
“I’ve been a fan of ‘The Floor’ since it debuted,” he said. “When I saw the casting notice, I just said, ‘screw it, what’s the worst that could happen?’”
Finally, in March, after months of interviews and casting work, Wood got word that out of the thousands of applicants, he was in — and representing his home state of Maine (along with his “adult hometown” of Bluffton in spirit) during the show’s next season.
From there, Wood and 99 other contestants spent about 10 days filming and competing in Ireland. Each competitor held expertise in a certain trivia category — Wood’s was sports casters.
Wood said he came in with a competitive mindset. The angst of surviving episode to episode, along with being in a high-stakes environment, “was madness,” but also incredibly exciting, he said.
How “The Floor” works
“The Floor” is based on the popular Dutch version of the show with the same name. It premiered in the U.S. on Jan. 2, 2024, and was picked up for a second and third season that same year.
The show was renewed for its fourth and upcoming fifth season in May 2025. Here’s how the game works:
- 100 contestants stand on individual LED-lit squares arranged in a giant floor grid.
- Each contestant is an expert in a specific trivia category — from U.S. presidents to pop music and everything in between.
- The first player, chosen at random, must challenge a neighbor to a head-to-head duel — but in the opponent’s specialty category.
- The winner of the duel claims the loser’s territory on the floor, expanding their area of control.
- That player then decides whether to launch another duel to gain more territory or pass the move, letting “The Floor” select the next challenger at random.
What to expect in Season 4
Season 4 brings fresh twists and bigger rewards, putting more at stake for competitors this time around:
- At the end of the first episode, the player with the most duel victories will earn $40,000 (a $20,000 increase from previous seasons).
- Every duel winner in the following episodes wins $20,000.
- Any contestant who wins three consecutive duels can steal another player’s trivia category.
- One square on the grid will secretly be designated the “Golden Square,” offering an extra $10,000 to whoever wins a duel contested on it.
The last contestant standing, who eventually controls the entire floor, wins the grand prize of $250,000.
While the competition was a fierce break from reality, Wood said he’s happy to be back home living the quiet life with his family and kids in Bluffton.
Season 4 of “The Floor” premieres Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 8 p.m. on Fox and will be available for streaming the next day on Hulu.
