Angry parent runs school bus full of kids off the road, South Carolina cops say
A dad upset over a school bus incident involving his child chased down the bus carrying 19 students and ran it off the road, South Carolina authorities said.
The dad and a school bus monitor are facing charges in two related incidents May 22, according to the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office.
A spokesperson for the Marlboro County School District told McClatchy News the incident was being handled by law enforcement and the district could not comment on the incident.
The school bus monitor was accused of assaulting a student who got out of their assigned seat on the bus by “utilizing her arm to restrain the student from moving down the aisle of the bus,” deputies wrote in a May 23 news release.
The incident was captured on camera, and the woman was charged with third-degree assault, according to the sheriff’s office.
The dad of the child involved went to the school to pick up his kids and is accused of yelling at the administrators and law enforcement, threatening the principal, deputies said.
McClatchy News is not identifying the dad to protect the identity of his children.
The bus left to bring students home, but the dad got in his vehicle with five kids in tow and started chasing the bus, deputies said.
He forced the school bus off the road and blocked it from driving away, making contact between the two vehicles, according to investigators.
He got out of his car and started punching the bus, then he tried and failed to force the front doors open, deputies said.
The bus driver managed to go around the dad’s car and start driving away, but the father threw something, damaging the back window, according to investigators.
Now, the dad is charged with child endangerment (24 victims), interfering with operations of a school bus, threatening the life of a public official, aggravated breach of peace, malicious injury to government property and disruption of a school, the sheriff’s office said.
The dad was arrested at home, and he was out on bond from a previous assault charge, according to deputies.
Marlboro County is in northeast South Carolina on the border of North Carolina.
