Person hospitalized and businesses damaged in overnight shooting, SC cops say

One person was injured and several businesses were damaged Sunday in an early morning shooting, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

At about 2 a.m., deputies responded to report of a person being shot in the 200 block of Blythewood Road, the sheriff’s department said in a news release. That’s in Blythewood, in an area densely packed with retail businesses and restaurants between Interstate 77 and U.S. 21/Main Street.

The shooters had left the area when deputies arrived, but the law enforcement officers found a victim who had been shot in the lower body, according to the release. The victim was given life-saving treatment until EMS took them to an area hospital, the sheriff’s department said.

Further information on the victim’s condition was not available.

No other injuries were reported, but the sheriff’s department said that several businesses on a stretch of Blythewood Road, between Main Street and McNulty Street, were damaged in the shooting. Information about the extent of the damage, and if any of the businesses have been closed, was not available.

Although no arrests have been reported, the sheriff’s department said it believes multiple people were involved in the shooting.

There was no word about a motive for the gunfire.
