South Carolina woman died days before her birthday, now killer is in jail, police say
Weeks after a South Carolina woman was killed in a hit-and-run crash the man who was driving the car that left the scene was arrested, according to the Columbia Police Department.
On Friday, 22-year-old Mikah Macey was charged with hit-and-run involving death, failure to render aid and disregarding a stop sign, police said.
That was almost two full weeks since the deadly, two-vehicle collision on Jan. 25, according to police.
Javashia C. Morris, a 37-year-old Columbia resident, was identified as the victim by Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford.
Police said Morris died five days before her 38th birthday. A funeral service was held for Morris Saturday in Estill, according to an obituary shared by Martin’s Funeral Home.
After 11 p.m. on Jan. 25, a silver Honda Odyssey driven by Macey collided with Morris’ vehicle in the 7700 block of Caughman Road before driving away, police said. That’s in the area between Garners Ferry Road and Leesburg Road.
The crash caused Morris to be ejected from her vehicle, according to police.
No other injuries were reported.
Days after Morris’ death, police asked the public for help identifying the Honda driver.
Information about how Macey was located was not available, but police said he was arrested by members of the department’s traffic safety unit in addition to violent crime investigators.
Macey was booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center and remains behind bars after bond was set at $150,465 on the combined charges, jail records show.
The Columbia resident is scheduled to appear in court again on April 25, according to Richland County judicial records.
On March 2, 2023, Macey was found guilty of multiple traffic violations, including speeding more than 25 mph over the speed limit and failure to maintain proof of insurance in motor vehicle, court records show.
