Victim was stabbed in the back outside Midlands bar, South Carolina police say

A South Carolina man was charged with attempted murder and other crimes following a knife attack outside of a Lexington County bar, according to the Chapin Police Department.

Newberry County resident Jacob Adam Riddle was also charged with second-degree assault & battery and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, police said Monday in a news release.

The attack happened at about 2 a.m. Sunday, according to the release. It occurred in the parking lot of the Tipsy Toad Tavern at 103 Beaufort Street, police said. That’s in the heart of Chapin, not far from Exit 91 on Interstate 26.

Riddle was seen stabbing the victim in the back prompting another individual to try and get Riddle off of the victim, according to the release. During the struggle the second individual was also cut with the knife, police said.

Once they were separated Riddle drove away before police arrived, according to the release.

The stabbing victim was taken to Lexington Medical Center with what police called non-life-threatening injuries. Further information on that victim’s condition was not available, and there was no word if the second individual who was cut required medical care.

Officers responding to the stabbing identified Riddle as the suspect through the combination of evidence collected in the bar’s parking lot as well as statements from several witnesses, police said.

With assistance from the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, police took Riddle into custody at his residence in Little Mountain, according to the release.

He was arrested Monday and is being held at the Lexington County Detention Center, jail records show. No bond has been set, according to jail records.

There was no word on a motive for the attack, or if Riddle and the victim knew each other prior to the incident.
