Motorcycle rider killed in crash with truck is identified by South Carolina coroner

One motorcycle rider died and another was injured Friday in a crash on a Midlands highway, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Mickey Hill, a 67-year-old Winnsboro resident, was the man who died in what Fairfield County Coroner Chris Hill called an accident in a Monday news release.

At about 1:30 p.m. Friday, Hill and another motorcycle rider, both on 2016 Harley Davidsons, were driving south on U.S. 321, said Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway of the Highway Patrol. A 2016 Dodge pickup entered U.S. 321 from S.C. 269 and the motorcycle riders hit the truck, according to Ridgeway.

EMS took both motorcycle riders to the emergency room at Prisma Health Richland hospital, where Hill died, the coroner’s office said.

Information on the condition of the other motorcycle rider was not available.

There was no word if Hill or the other rider were wearing helmets.

Ridgeway said the pickup driver was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday, and the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office.

Through May 22, at least 357 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, and 42 involved a motorcycle, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least seven people have died in Fairfield County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data. There were 15 deaths reported in the county in 2023, DPS said.
