Winning a lottery game’s grand prize won’t stop SC man from buying more tickets

Winning a scratch-off game’s grand prize won’t deter a Midlands man from buying more lottery tickets in the future, according to South Carolina Education Lottery officials.

“I’m not done yet,” the man told lottery officials after he won a $300,000 jackpot, according to a Thursday news release.

The man bought what turned out to be the six-figure winning X The Money ticket for $10 at the One Stop Shop on Sumter Highway in Bishopville, according to the release. That’s in Lee County, near Exit 116 on Interstate 20.

The man told lottery officials that he waited until he got home before he scratched off the ticket, revealing the winning numbers. When he did, he couldn’t contain his enthusiasm, according to the release.

“I was jumping up and down. It’s a lot of excitement,” the winner said. “Luck was on my side.”

While the winner said he plans to continue purchasing lottery tickets, don’t expect him to re-invest all of his winnings into scratchers.

The man said he plans to taking some time off to travel after collecting his newfound windfall, according to the release. He didn’t provide specific details, saying only “I’m going to enjoy it,” according to the release.

The winner will be allowed to retain some privacy, as South Carolina is one of 11 states — along with Arizona, Delaware, Georgia, Kansas, Maryland, New Jersey, North Dakota, Ohio, Texas and Virginia — that allow lottery winners to remain anonymous.

The odds of winning the $300,000 top prize in the X The Money game were 1-in-840,000, according to the release. One of the game’s five top prize-winning tickets remains unclaimed, officials said.

The One Stop Shop received a commission of $3,000 for selling the claimed ticket, according to the release.

The Bishopville gas station/convenience store produced another big winner earlier this month when someone won $10,000 on a scratch-off game purchased at the One Stop Shop, officials said.
