Man killed in crash on busy Columbia road is identified by Richland County coroner
One person was killed Monday night in a crash on a busy Columbia road, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Robert C. Hinson, a 69-year-old Columbia resident, was identified as the man who died, Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford said Wednesday night.
The vehicle vs. pedestrian collision happened on Broad River Road in Richland County, said Lance Cpl. William Bennett. That’s an area densely packed with retail businesses and restaurants.
At about 9:40 p.m., a 2016 Jeep was driving west on Broad River Road and fatally hit the pedestrian near the intersection with St. Andrews Road, according to Bennett.
Bennett said there were two people in the Jeep and neither was hurt. No other injuries were reported.
The crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
This was at least the second fatal collision in a three-hour span Monday in Richland County.
At about 7:10 p.m., a 2016 Nissan Versa was legally stopped on the median of I-20, near the 76 mile marker, and was hit in the rear by a 2002 Yamaha motorcycle, according to the Highway Patrol. The motorcycle rider died, and the Nissan driver was taken to an area hospital, the Highway Patrol said.
Through Sunday, 636 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 39 people have died in Richland County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 67 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
