A tree was in the road and a motorcycle rider was killed, SC Highway Patrol says
One person was killed late Wednesday night when a motorcycle crashed into a downed tree, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 11:40 p.m. in Anderson County, Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover said Thursday.
The rider was driving a 1997 Harley-Davidson east on U.S. 178, and near the intersection with S.C. 88 the motorcycle hit a tree that was across the road, according to Glover.
The rider died at the scene, Glover said.
The Anderson County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the motorcycle rider.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if the motorcycle rider was wearing a helmet, and the Highway Patrol did not say if the crash remains under investigation.
Through Sunday, 621 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, and 72 involved a motorcycle, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 16 people have died in Anderson County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 44 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
