Driver killed when car flipped over and crashed onto railway, SC Highway Patrol says

One person was killed and another was injured Saturday night when a car ran off a road and flipped over before crashing on a railway, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 9:20 p.m. in Laurens County, said Master Trooper Gary Miller.

A 2012 Kia sedan was driving north on Harris Springs Road when it ran off the right side near the intersection with U.S. 221, according to Miller.

The car hit a ditch and overturned before crashing onto the tracks, and the driver died, Miller said.

The Laurens County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the driver.

Although a person sitting in the front passenger seat was injured, Miller said the passenger was not taken to a hospital. Further information on the passenger’s condition was not available.

Miller said nobody else was in the car, and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word if either the driver or passenger were wearing seat belts.

Information about what caused the car to veer off the road was not available. The Highway Patrol didn’t say if the crash remains under investigation.

Through Thursday, 612 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 13 people have died in Laurens County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 24 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
