South Carolina woman killed in crash with two tractor trailers, officials say
A woman was killed when her car crashed into two tractor trailers, according to South Carolina officials.
Whitney Strong, a 32-year-old Bonneau resident, died in Tuesday’s crash, according to the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office.
The three-vehicle collision happened at about 7:15 a.m., said Lance Cpl. Nick Pye of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Strong was driving a 2012 Dodge sedan north on U.S. 17 ALT in Moncks Corner, according to the coroner’s office. Near the intersection with Willow Haven Lane the car collided with a 2021 Peterbilt tractor trailer, then crashed into a 2013 Volvo tractor trailer, Pye said. Both semis were heading south on U.S. 17 ALT when the collisions happened, according to Pye.
Strong died at the scene, the coroner’s office said.
The driver of the Volvo tractor trailer was injured and taken to an area hospital, Pye said. Further information on the Volvo driver’s condition was not available.
Pye said the Peterbilt driver was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.
Information about what caused the collision was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office.
Through Sunday, 577 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 35 people have died in Berkeley County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 49 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
