Passenger dies and driver injured after car crashes into tree, SC Highway Patrol says

One person was killed and another was injured after a car crashed into a tree, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

The single-vehicle collision happened in Orangeburg County Friday, and a passenger in the car died Saturday, Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway said Sunday.

At about 12:30 a.m. Friday, a 2023 Ford Mustang was driving east on S.C. 310/Camden Road and the car ran off the left side near the intersection with Lodge Hall Street, according to Ridgeway. The car crashed into a tree, and both the driver and a passenger were flown by helicopter to Prisma Health Richland hospital, Ridgeway said.

At about 5 p.m. Saturday, the Holly Hill resident who was a passenger in the car died at the hospital, according to Ridgeway.

The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the passenger.

Further information on the condition of the Summerville resident who was driving the car was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if either the driver or passenger were wearing seat belts.

Information about what caused the car to veer off the road was not available, but the Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash.

Through July 4, at least 489 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 22 people have died in Orangeburg County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 47 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
