This South Carolina city ranks among the nation’s best places for food lovers to visit
Food lovers looking to discover their next favorite meal should consider a trip to one South Carolina tourist hot spot, new rankings suggest.
Charleston ranks No. 2 on a list of places with standout cuisine and restaurants, according to results published by Tripadvisor on Wednesday, Jan. 18.
To create the list, the travel website studied comments vacationers left from November 2021 to October 2022. While examining food and other categories, the website said it considered the “quality and quantity” of millions of reviews about “accommodations, restaurants, and things to do” across the country.
Charleston earned the second-highest spot in the food rankings after another Southern tourist destination edged it out. New Orleans, known for serving Creole- and Cajun-inspired dishes, landed at the top of the list.
If you’re in Charleston, Tripadvisor recommends taking a food tour to learn about grits, barbecue and other regional favorites. Experts also praised the scenery in the city, which they say is “bursting with Southern charm and hospitality.”
“Travelers consistently rate Charleston’s food scene highly,” according to Tripadvisor, which told McClatchy News that the city’s food tours and restaurants received acclaim from the travel website last year.
Also in 2022, Yelp named Charleston one of the nation’s best destinations for foodies. Restaurants in the region also were honored for dishes ranging from pizza to sandwiches, McClatchy News reported.
In the latest Tripadvisor rankings, Charleston didn’t just make it onto the list of top places to eat. The city also was No. 8 in a separate category that measured U.S. places that tourists love to visit.
In the food rankings, Charleston was the sole place in South Carolina to land a top 10 spot. Rounding out the top five:
- New York City
- Savannah, Georgia
- Maui, Hawaii
On a separate list of best food destinations in the world, the top honor went to Rome, Italy.
