A driver was killed when a vehicle slammed into a disabled SUV in South Carolina, officials said.

State troopers said a Ford Explorer sat disabled in a westbound lane of a Marion County highway. That’s when a Cadillac Escalade was traveling west on the highway and reportedly hit the other vehicle.

The driver of the Ford died in the Jan. 4 crash, officials said in a news release.

The driver of the Escalade — the only other vehicle involved — was rushed to a nearby medical center after the incident, according to S.C. Highway Patrol.

Troopers continue to investigate the deadly crash, which was reported just before 9:30 p.m. on U.S. Highway 76. The area is near Laughlin Road, about 4 miles west of the city of Marion and roughly 50 miles northwest of Myrtle Beach.

A person who answered a phone number listed for the Marion County coroner’s office told McClatchy News on Jan. 5 that the deceased person’s identity hadn’t been released publicly.
