Gunfire erupts at intersection, killing 18-year-old woman in SUV, SC coroner says
An 18-year-old woman was killed when someone fired shots into her boyfriend’s vehicle at a Gaffney intersection, according to Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler in South Carolina.
The victim has been identified as Alexis Shaynne Griffin of Gaffney.
It happened Wednesday, Jan. 4, near the intersection of Overbrook Drive and West Buford Street, he said. Gaffney is about 50 miles southwest of Charlotte.
“Griffin was a front seat passenger in an SUV that was being driven south on Overbrook Drive by her boyfriend about 10 p.m.,” Fowler reported.
“Two male subjects reportedly were seen on foot near the intersection of West Buford Street after which gunfire erupted with one of the bullets striking the vehicle and then Griffin.”
The driver “sped from the scene” to Gaffney’s Cherokee Medical Center, located two miles away, to get help, but Griffin died about 90 minutes later, Fowler said.
An autopsy is scheduled as part of the investigation.
The shooter remains unidentified and it’s not known if Griffin was an intended target.
