South Carolina

SC among the best states to retire, new report shows. Here’s where it ranks and why

South Carolina was ranked as the sixth best state to retire, according to a recent study.

The study ranking South Carolina was conducted by TOP Data, a market research firm, was conducted to help individuals find the place where they would be most happy following their working years and into their transition to retirement.

It was conducted based on research analysis regarding the nation’s 50 states through 38 key metrics distributed in five relevant categories. These categories of high relevance in retirement are affordability, entertainment, healthcare, safety and wellness.

South Carolina ranked as the sixth best state in the country as a destination to retire due to the state’s multiple retirement housing offerings and its high quality public hospitals.

South Carolina is known for a predominantly slower lifestyle, outdoor activities, award-winning golf courses, prevalent tennis and pickleball presence and private, gated neighborhood communities.

This isn’t the first time South Carolina has been ranked based on how favorable it is for retirement.

In March, popular travel magazine Travel & Leisure ranked a South Carolina city as ‘One of the Best Places to Retire in the U.S.”

Although generally the Lowcountry seems to get the most outward attention, Travel and Leisure recognized Anderson and nearby Lake Hartwell for their beauty as being located at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This is in addition to Anderson’s working farms, museums, cultural sites, golf courses, wineries, breweries, and the presence of Lake Hartwell.

These ‘perks’ are in addition to the travel magazine’s recognition of affordable housing in the area for retirees, including lakefront properties, ‘big city amenities’, healthcare, a historic downtown and nicknames given to Anderson such as “The Friendliest City in South Carolina,” and “The City of Hospitality.”

Here are the top 10 ‘best states to retire’ in the country, according to the latest study.

  • Connecticut

  • Florida

  • Pennsylvania
