SC man riding moped killed after crash with pickup truck, coroner says
A South Carolina man was killed Tuesday when the moped he was riding crashed with a pickup truck, the Aiken County Coroner’s Office said.
John Barbara is the 54-year-old Windsor resident who died, Coroner Darryl Ables said Wednesday in a news release.
At about 4:20 p.m., Barbara was riding a moped on Silver Bluff Road near downtown Aiken and collided with a 2010 Dodge Ram at the intersection with King Edward Way, according to the release.
EMS took Barbara to an area hospital where he died at 5:30 p.m., Ables said.
There was no word if Barbara wore a helmet.
An autopsy will be performed in Newberry, according to the release.
Information if the truck driver was hurt was not available, but no other injuries were reported.
Details about what caused the moped and pickup to collide was not available, but it is being investigated by the coroner’s office and the Aiken Department of Public Safety.
Through Monday, 539 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2022, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,194 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 12 people have died in Aiken County crashes in 2022, DPS reported. Last year, 36 deaths were reported there, according to DPS data.
