Coroner needs help identifying man killed by tractor trailer on highway in the Midlands

One person was killed Wednesday night after being hit by a tractor trailer on a section of a major interstate running through the Midlands, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

The collision happened at about 6:20 p.m., near the 98 mile marker on Interstate 95, according to Lance Cpl. Nick Pye. That’s in Orangeburg County, in the area near Lake Marion, not far from the junction with S.C. 6.

A pedestrian was walking west across I-95 when the crash with the northbound semi truck happened, Pye said.

There was no word if the pedestrian died at the scene, or was taken to an area hospital.

The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office said it’s unable to identify the man killed in the collision, and is asking for the public’s help if they live in the Santee area or were in the area just before the collision.

“The victim is a Black male, possibly in his 40s or early 50s,” the coroner’s office said Thursday in a news release. “He was wearing a gold shirt with blue jeans and black shoes. He was not carrying any identification.”

Anyone familiar with the man is asked to call the coroner’s office at 803-533-5842 or 888-850-8667.

The tractor trailer driver was not hurt, according to Pye. No other injuries were reported.

The crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Tuesday, 474 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2022 — and 68 were pedestrians — according to the state Department of Public Safety. In 2021, 193 pedestrians were among the 1,194 people who died on South Carolina roads, DPS said.

At least 15 people have died in Orangeburg County crashes in 2022, and three involved a pedestrian, DPS reported. Last year, 45 deaths were reported there, and six involved a pedestrian, according to DPS data.
