This SC brewery got its start in a fraternity house. Now it ranks No. 1 in the state
A brewery has roots in a fraternity house — and now ranks No. 1 in South Carolina.
Low Tide Brewing on Johns Island tops a list of places in the state that make and serve their own beer, according to results shared Monday, May 9.
To create the list, the restaurant review website Yelp said it studied listings in each state and considered their health scores.
“We identified businesses in the breweries category on Yelp that brew their own beer, then ranked those spots using a number of factors, including the total volume and ratings of reviews,” the company wrote in a blog post.
In South Carolina, customers helped Low Tide Brewing score more than four out of five stars. Some of them rave online about the business, which they say serves a range of beers in a relaxing setting.
Low Tide Brewing opened in 2016, but its founder, Mike Fielding, thought of launching a brewery years before.
“Mike started home brewing in the basement of his fraternity house and always held on to the dream of opening up his own brewery,” the business wrote on its website. “After a two-year (stint) in Australia, Mike decided it was time to make his dream into a reality. After finishing his business degree and while working for CB Craft Brewers in his native upstate New York, he headed back to settle in his favorite city.”
These days, the brewery welcomes customers to Johns Island, which is in the Charleston area. The business said it teams up to make beers that pair well with foods.
“We work with chefs, bartenders, and restaurant owners to create flavors that are truly tailored to either complement or set off a dish or style,” the business wrote. “The concept of beer + food pairing is widely known, but giving restaurants the opportunity to work with a brewery at any time to create a unique beer is not conventional.”
The Charleston area is accustomed to being recognized for its food and drink.
In April, two of the region’s restaurants were named among the “most outstanding” in the world.
Months earlier, two Charleston-area eateries made Yelp’s list of the nation’s best places to eat, McClatchy News reported.
