A South Carolina man died after a dump truck rolled down a hill and hit him, officials said.

The man was rushed to a hospital after he tried to tow the disabled truck with a Ford F-250 on Saturday, March 19, according to the Greenville County Coroner’s Office.

Officials said he got out of the dump truck just before a chain broke loose, sending the truck downhill. The vehicle struck the man, identified in a news release as Daniel Darrel Howes of Greenville.

Howes, 53, was flown to Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital. He was later pronounced dead, officials said.

The S.C. Highway Patrol in a news release said the towing incident happened just before 3:30 p.m. on Lawton Road, near U.S. Highway 276 in Greenville County. The Ford was turning into a driveway when the dump truck broke away.

News releases don’t list the condition of another person reportedly helping to tow the truck.
