Husband & wife argued about size of SC lottery prize. The right answer was much bigger
A Midlands couple couldn’t see eye-to-eye on how much money they would get after the wife discovered she had a winning lottery ticket.
The woman thought she had won $1,000, but her husband was adamant the prize from the scratch-off game was 100 times bigger, South Carolina Education Lottery officials said in a news release.
In this case, it was good that he won the argument.
The couple can now debate what to do with the $100,000 jackpot they won.
“I was shell shocked,” the wife told lottery officials.
She initially counted 10 words that matched on the Lady Jumbo Bucks Crossword ticket, but a recount revealed 11 words matched for the top prize win, according to the release.
“It made us both really happy,” the wife said.
The winners did not tell lottery officials how they will spend the money from the windfall.
The couple’s names were not released because South Carolina is one of eight states — along with Delaware, Georgia, Kansas, Maryland, North Dakota, Ohio and Texas — that allow lottery winners to remain anonymous.
The winning scratch-off game was bought for $3 at the Murphy Express gas station/convenience store on U.S. 378/Sunset Boulevard, according to the release. That’s in Lexington, near Exit 61 on Interstate 20.
The gas station/convenience store received a commission of $1,000 for selling the claimed winning ticket, according to the release.
Lottery officials said the odds of winning $100,000 in Lady Jumbo Bucks were 1-in-600,000.
