Drowning death of 20-year-old man reported after body is recovered, SC coroner says

An investigation is underway following the drowning death of a 20-year-old South Carolina man, the Aiken County Coroner’s Office said.

A day after Tyez J. Minter went missing, the North Augusta resident’s body was discovered Friday in the Savannah River, Coroner Darryl Ables said in a news release.

At about 10:30 p.m. Thursday, Minter and friends jumped off the boat landing at Boeckh Park, according to the release. That’s at 508 Front St. in North Augusta, near SRP Park and the state line between South Carolina and Georgia.

Minter never resurfaced, and the North Augusta Department of Public Safety and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources initiated a search, Ables said.

The overnight search had to be stopped because of inclement weather conditions, but was resumed Friday, according to the release.

At about 3:15 p.m., DNR divers located Minter’s body, close to 200 hundred yards from the boat landing, Ables said. There was no word on how deep the water is in that section of the Savannah River.

No other injuries were reported.

An autopsy is scheduled Monday morning in Newberry, and the coroner’s office and North Augusta DPS continue to investigate the death.
