Where’s the best pizza in South Carolina? This Detroit-style shop made Yelp’s top list
South Carolina is home to one of the best pizza shops in the nation — so get ready to dig in, new rankings show.
Toni’s Detroit Style Pizza in Mount Pleasant made a list of top 100 places to get a slice, according to the restaurant review website Yelp.
To make the list, Yelp said it studied pizza-related businesses across the United States and “ranked those spots using a number of factors including the total volume and ratings of reviews,” according to a report published Feb. 8.
Of all the pizza shops considered nationwide, Toni’s earned a No. 25 spot in the rankings. While the business is near Charleston, the restaurant said it aims to give customers a taste of the Motor City.
Toni’s specializes in Detroit-style pizza, which are cheesy pies cooked in square or rectangular pans. It’s believed that the inventor of the dish “got his initial batch of pans from a friend who worked in a factory that used the pans for spare parts,” according to the michigan.org travel website.
At Toni’s, some customers say they can’t get enough of the thick crust loaded with toppings, helping the business to score 5 out of 5 stars on Yelp. Customers are also fans of the customer service, something the restaurant prides itself on, according to its website.
Three Detroit natives — Steve Hopkins and Toni and Pete Sahutske — came up with the idea for the shop, which also serves appetizers, salads and pasta.
“Through his many years in the business Pete has perfected the art of Detroit style pizza-making and Toni prides herself on offering the kind of first rate service her customers have come to expect,” the restaurant said on its website. “You won’t find anything else like this — crispy deep dish crust, unique brick cheese, baked in authentic blue steel pizza pans.”
The shop even received recognition from some Michiganders and people who are new fans of the Detroit style, according to its Yelp page.
While the shop has customers craving its pies, South Carolina residents have been curious about another pizza place. Last year, data showed Pizza Hut was the state’s most-searched pizza brand on Google Maps.
And in 2020, a study of cellphone data found Marco’s was the pizza chain people in the Palmetto State went to more than any other, McClatchy News reported.
On the more recent Yelp list, the overall top-ranked shop was Cheese Board Pizza in Berkeley, California.
