Sisters, ages 68 and 72, die when house catches fire in South Carolina, coroner says
Two sisters, ages 68 and 72, died when a house caught fire in South Carolina, officials said.
Firefighters responded to a burning home and put out the blaze before finding the two women inside last week, the Aiken County Coroner’s Office said in a news release.
Officials said crews battled the fire at about 10 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3, in Warrenville, roughly 60 miles southwest of Columbia and near the Georgia border.
The two people found inside the home died and were scheduled to have autopsies. Now, the coroner’s office said it has identified the women.
Alice Gantt, 68, and Leila Ann Gantt, 72, died “of smoke and soot inhalation and thermal injuries,” Coroner Darryl M. Ables said in an updated news release.
As of Dec. 9, officials said they were continuing to investigate the cause of the blaze.
