Missing man’s body found in ditch off Midlands-area road, coroner says

The search for a missing man came to an end when his body was found in a ditch near a Midlands-area road, the Clarendon County Coroner’s Office said Thursday.

After days of looking for Neil David, a family member found his body on Wednesday morning, Coroner Bucky Mock said in a news release.

The 50-year-old Alcolu man was discovered just off U.S. 301 near Manning, according to the release. That’s near the area where the highway is also called North Brooks Street, and is about 60 miles east of Columbia.

An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday at the Medial University of South Carolina in Charleston, according to the release.

Mock said a cause of death would be determined after the autopsy, but told The State that foul play and suicide have been ruled out.

A traumatic injury caused by a crash or a medical emergency are both possibilities to be examined, according to Mock.

The Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office said David suffered from epilepsy, and was last seen alive riding his moped on Sunday night, WLTX reported.

His body was found after his moped was spotted, according to the coroner’s office.

Both the sheriff’s department and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division were involved in the search for David, Mock said.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating what Mock called an accident.
