Baby suffers life-threatening injuries in deadly crash on Midlands road, SC cops say

A Columbia man was killed and a baby is fighting for its life following a crash on a Midlands road Sunday, South Carolina officials said.

When emergency responders found the car being driven by Bernard Eric Taylor, it was upside down in a pond, Kershaw County Coroner David West said in a news release.

A 911 call was made around 4 p.m. about a car losing control and flipping into a pond near the intersection of Bowen and Watson streets, said Master Trooper David Jones of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The Elgin-area road is about 20 miles north of Columbia.

A 2003 Volkswagen was heading west on Bowen Street when it ran off left side of road and hit a fire hydrant before it flipped over into a retention pond, where it was fully submerged, according to Jones.

A Kershaw County sheriff’s deputy and a fireman with Kershaw County EMS pulled Taylor and the baby from the car, but the 27-year-old died at the scene, West said.

After being rushed to Kershaw Health, the baby was later flown to Prisma Health in Richland County, according to West.

Details about the child’s condition was not available.

Taylor was wearing a seat belt and the baby was properly restrained in an approved car seat, West said.

Information on what caused the Volkswagen to veer off the road was not available. The single-vehicle collision is being investigated by Highway Patrol.

Through Friday afternoon, 570 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2020, according to the Department of Public Safety.
