Midlands man charged in deadly hit-and-run is a habitual offender, SC cops say
A week after a deadly hit-and-run collision on a Midlands road, a man was arrested on multiple charges, South Carolina Highway Patrol said.
Among the charges filed against Brian Keith Maynor is one for being a habitual traffic offender, jail records show.
The 45-year-old Sumter resident was also charged with hit-and-run, driving under suspension — third offense, and possession of less than one gram of meth or cocaine, according to jail records.
The crash happened on July 12 at about 1 a.m. near the intersection of U.S. 378 and U.S. 15, Cpl. Sonny Collins said. That’s near downtown Sumter, not far from a Walmart Supercenter and USC-Sumter.
A person walking across the street died after being hit, according to Collins. The pedestrian was identified as Gregory Jamar Wright, according to Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker.
The 26-year-old Sumter resident died at an area hospital, and an autopsy was held at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, Baker said.
The driver left the scene, and Highway Patrol investigators searched for the vehicle for days.
Maynor was arrested Friday and is being held at the Sumter-Lee Detention Center while awaiting a bond hearing, jail records show.
Maynor has a criminal history with several traffic crime convictions, Sumter County court records show. That includes multiple convictions for driving under suspension, DUI, failure to stop for blue lights, habitual traffic offenders, as well as individual convictions for failure to obey traffic control devices, and open container of beer or wine in a motor vehicle, according to court records.
Following a bond hearing, Maynor’s next scheduled court appearance is Aug. 11, jail records show.
Through Friday, 500 people have died on South Carolina roads this year, including 77 pedestrians, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.
