Crashed tree blocking interstate heading to Columbia

Drivers heading toward Columbia Sunday morning encountered delays after a tree fell on a major interstate.

Two westbound lanes on Interstate 20 were blocked by the collapsed tree, that stretched across the highway, according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation.

The obstruction happened shortly after 8 a.m., near Exit 76, SCDOT said on Twitter. That is the Alpine Road exit in Richland County, which is the junction with Interstate 77 toward Charlotte and Charleston.

Traffic was bottled up as vehicles maneuvered away from the downed tree, SCDOT cameras showed. Multiple emergency responders were on the scene.

Information on any possible injuries caused by the crashed tree was not available from the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.

There was no word on when the tree would be removed from I 20, and when all lanes of the highway would be cleared for traffic.

This is a developing story, check back for updates.
