Another SC college has frozen tuition for 2020-2021 because of coronavirus

Coastal Carolina University has frozen tuition, room and board for the 2020-2021 school year, the school announced Monday.

The board of trustees chose to not increase the cost of attendance because of increased financial pressure on students in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, according to a release.

“Amid the chaos that COVID-19 has created for so many current and future members of Coastal Carolina University, this is something that we can control and that we can do to add some stability and certainty,” Coastal Carolina President David DeCenzo said in a statement. “I’m thankful to have a board that has the best interests of the students in mind.”

In-state tuition will remain at $11,640 per year and out of state tuition will stay at $27,394 per year, according to the release.

Coastal Carolina, at which enrollment was 10,484 last fall, is not the first S.C. university to freeze tuition for next school year. In March, Francis Marion University announced it would be freezing tuition for the 2020-2021 school year, spokesman Clay Tucker Mitchell said. In late April, Clemson University cited coronavirus as the reason it froze tuition for the upcoming school year.

Colleges are set to face financial and enrollment struggles next school year as students feel less confident they can afford college, according to a previous article from The State.
