Student charged after bringing gun to school, Richland County Sheriff says
A teenager was locked up after bringing a gun to his high school Monday, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department said.
A 15-year-old student at Westwood High School was found with a handgun, the sheriff’s department said in a news release.
Another student saw the teen pull the gun out of his backpack during lunch, according to the release.
The student reported the gun to school administrators, who then told Westwood’s school resource officer, the sheriff’s department said.
Deputies searched the student and his backpack, where they found the gun, according to the release.
The teen was charged with carrying a weapon on school property and taken to the juvenile wing of Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
His identity is not being made public because he is under the age of 17.
Information about any discipline the student faces from his high school, including possible expulsion, was not available.
