Tractor trailer crash blocks interstate near Malfunction Junction on morning commute
An 18-wheel tractor trailer truck jackknifed in a collision on an interstate running through Richland County, creating a traffic jam for drivers on the Tuesday morning commute.
Multiple lanes of Interstate 20 were blocked following the crash that happened at 7:15 a.m., the South Carolina Department of Transportation said on Twitter.
The wreck occurred on the westbound side of I-20, heading toward Columbia, near Exit 65, according to the tweet. That’s the exit for Broad River Road (U.S. 176), not far from the area known as Malfunction Junction.
No injuries were reported in the collision, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.
But drivers were delayed as two of the three westbound lanes were blocked by the truck in the middle of the highway, traffic cameras showed.
Traffic was backed up for about four miles, as the interstate looked more like a parking lot on the traffic cameras.
Information on the number of vehicles involved was not available.
Another collision was reported on I-20 westbound near Exit 68, according to DPS. No injuries were reported in that collision near the junction with Monticello Road (S.C. 215).
Eastbound lanes were also closed because the collision caused damage to the median on the interstate, tweeted Master Trooper David Jones of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
All eastbound and westbound lanes were reopened at about 9:15 a.m., SCODT tweeted.
