Woman killed in wreck after car flips before crashing into backyard, SC coroner says

A 32-year-old South Carolina woman was killed Sunday in a late-night crash that left her vehicle wrecked in a backyard, the Greenwood County Coroner’s Office said.

The single-vehicle collision happened just after 11:30 p.m. about three miles outside of Greenwood, said Master Trooper Gary Miller of the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.

Taniko Kenyetta Davis was driving east on Emerald Road, toward S.C. 246, when she ran off the road, Coroner Sonny Cox said in a news release. That’s about 80 miles west of Columbia.

When her 2014 Toyota Avalon drove off the right side of Emerald Road, the car hit a ditch and flipped, Miller said.

As it overturned the Toyota smashed into trees, a fence and a guide wire, according to Miller.

When the vehicle came to rest in the backyard of a home on Brentwood Drive, the Greenwood woman was no longer inside the Toyota, Cox said.

She was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected during the collision, Highway Patrol reported.

Davis suffered blunt force trauma and died at the scene of the accident, according to Cox.

There were no other passengers in the Toyota and no injuries were reported from anyone at the residence, the coroner’s office said.

Information on why the car ran off the road was not available.

The wreck remains under investigation by Highway Patrol and the coroner’s office.

As of Monday, 107 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2020, according to the Department of Public Safety. Of those deaths, 82 of the victims had access to seat belts, and 45 were not wearing safety restraints, DPS said.
