Crash causes injuries, blocks traffic on interstate during wet morning commute
Drivers experienced delays during the wet Thursday morning commute following a collision on an interstate in Columbia.
Traffic was backed up after a crash caused an eastbound lane of Interstate 20 to be closed, the South Carolina Department of Transportation said on Twitter.
SCDOT said the wreck occurred just before 8 a.m. near Exit 68, the Monticello Road exit toward Jenkinsville.
The South Carolina Department of Public Safety said injuries were reported in the collision.
Information on the number of people hurt and their condition was not available.
All of the lanes reopened at about 8:30 a.m., according to SCDOT. But traffic proceeded slowly through the area as emergency vehicles remained on the scene with other cars on the right shoulder of I-20, traffic cameras showed.
There was no word on the number of vehicles involved in the crash, nor the cause of the wreck.
Severe weather is forecast to affect the Midlands Thursday, and the South Carolina Highway Patrol warned drivers to take extra time and precaution when hitting the road.
“As more rain moves in, SLOW down and limit your distractions,” Master Trooper David Jones said on Twitter. “Never drive through any flooded roads.”
Powerful and dangerous storms are expected to impact, the National Weather Service said.
Severe thunderstorms, damaging winds, tornadoes, and flooding are all possible, with the most activity predicted between Thursday afternoon and evening, according to the forecast.
