Two killed, another hurt in truck crash on Midlands road, SC Highway patrol says
UPDATE: The occupants of the vehicle have been identified as students at Saluda High School, according to the Saluda County Coroner’s Office.
Original Story
Two Saluda High School students were killed and a third person suffered life-threatening injuries in a late-night truck crash Monday, authorities said.
The single-vehicle collision occurred at about 10:15 p.m. Monday on Long Road in Saluda, Master Trooper David Jones said. That is close to U.S. 378 and Coley Farm Road.
The 2007 Chevrolet Silverado pickup was heading south on Long Road when it ran off the left of the roadway and smashed into a tree, Jones said.
None of the three occupants was wearing a seat belt, according to Jones.
The driver and a back-seat passenger were both ejected, while the front-seat passenger was entrapped in the truck, Jones said.
The driver and the front-seat passenger were killed in the wreck, and the back-seat passenger suffered life-threatening injuries.
That passenger was taken to an area hospital, but further information on their condition was not available.
The Saluda County Coroner’s Office said the two people who died were Saluda High School students. They have not been publicly identified.
Information on what caused the truck to run off the road was not available, but the collision remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
Less than a month into 2020, 45 people have died on South Carolina roads, according to the Department of Public Safety. Of those deaths, 32 of the victims had access to seat belts, and 18 were not wearing safety restraints, DPS said.
