Comedy star Dave Chappelle comes to Columbia for show to benefit presidential hopeful

Dave Chappelle will bring his stand-up routine to Columbia to benefit a candidate for president.

The comedy superstar announced a Jan. 29 show at the Township Auditorium, venue officials said on Twitter.

Proceeds from the performance will benefit 2020 presidential hopeful Andrew Yang, according to a release from the Democrat’s campaign.

“I’m Yang Gang!” Chappelle said in the release where he endorsed Yang for president.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. for the show scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

Tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. Thursday, according to the tweet. Ticket prices range from $69.50 to $89.50, according to the Township Auditorium.

On Jan. 30, Chappelle will perform at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center, according to Ticketmaster. That performance will also benefit Yang’s campaign.

“Dave is one of the most important voices in our country today and I’m thrilled he has thrown his support behind this campaign,” Yang said in the release. “He and I share similar concerns about the future and hopes for what it could be. We are also parents who see the world that we are leaving to our kids and believe they deserve better.”

Chappelle is no stranger to politicians.

When Chappelle performed at the Township in 2017, he was presented with keys to the city by Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin, who proclaimed Feb. 3 to be Dave Chappelle Day.

Before the shows, he stopped by Allen University’s Chappelle Auditorium which was named for his great grandfather, African Methodist Episcopal Bishop William D. Chappelle, an Allen president, and local businessman.

Known for his roles in movies “The Nutty Professor,” “Half Baked,” “A Star Is Born,” and his sketch comedy series “Chappelle’s Show,” the comedian also has several stand-up comedy specials on Netflix.

Chappelle is not the only comedy legend performing at the Township in 2020. Jerry Seinfeld will bring his tour to Columbia for a show on March 7, and tickets are on sale from $50-165.
