Counterfeiters bought a classic 1976 Chevy Corvette in South Carolina, sheriff says
Two men bought a red 1976 Chevrolet Corvette on New Year’s Day in South Carolina, but the payment ended up being fake, according to the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office.
The seller did not learn until later that the payment was counterfeit, the sheriff’s office said, sharing photos of the classic Chevy and the two men on its Facebook page.
The men used a fake cashier’s check to buy the Corvette, according to WHNS and the GoLaurens news site.
The two passed the fake payment at a home in Honea Path, about 30 miles south of Greenville, officials said. The sheriff’s office is asking for help to find the car and identify the two men seen on surveillance cameras.
The men were driving a maroon sedan but the sheriff’s office did not know the tag number, according to the post.
The sheriff’s office asks anyone with information to call Laurens County Dispatch at 864-984-2523 or give an anonymous tip by calling CrimeStoppers at 864-68-CRIME.
