A teenager has been arrested on murder charges, among other crimes, following the shooting deaths of two people in an apartment, the Columbia Police Department said on Monday.

Genari Gresean McNeil, 18, is charged with two counts of murder, armed robbery and first-degree burglary, police said in a news release.

The people killed were identified as Jahquan Peterson, 26, and Mary Carmichael, 23, according to a tweet from the Columbia Police Department. Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said both victims “were fatally wounded in the upper body,” according to the news release.

The shooting happened Saturday night at 221 Skyland Drive, police said on Twitter. That’s off Greystone Boulevard and Interstate 126, near the Broad River.

McNeil had a male accomplice during the crime that occurred after 10 p.m., and police are still searching for the second suspect, according to the news release. Both McNeil and the other man “were wearing masks during (the) crime,” police tweeted.

Police said in the release they “believe the motive for the shooting was armed robbery.”

McNeil is believed to have been wounded in the shooting “when a victim returned gunfire during the armed robbery,” as he showed up at an area hospital soon after the fatal shootings, police said in the news release.
