Thief slams SUV door on hand of woman aiding sick mom outside hospital, NC police say

A woman was taking her 80-year-old mom to a North Carolina hospital when two thieves took off in her SUV, officials say.

It happened after the daughter pulled up to High Point Medical Center last week, according to the city’s police department.

She was accompanying her mom, who has cancer, WGHP and other news outlets report.

The woman helped her sick mother get into a wheelchair and went inside the hospital, according to the station and Curtis Cheeks III, a High Point Police Department spokesperson.

When the daughter came back outside, a man and woman headed toward her Chevrolet Trailblazer, the spokesperson wrote in an email.

The SUV owner “tried to intervene by putting her hand in the car, hoping to grab one of the suspects,” WFMY reports.

That’s when the female suspect slammed the passenger’s side door onto the woman, leaving her hurt, police say.

The two left the hospital in the stolen SUV, which was the only way for the mom to get to her appointments, WGHP reports. The vehicle also had electronics and a wallet inside, according to an incident report.

The suspects later used the woman’s credit cards, police say.

Wayne Frederick Hartel, 26, and Megan Lynn Allen, 27, have warrants for common law robbery, according to High Point officials.

Police say the two were arrested and were being held Thursday on fraud and other charges, according to Guilford County jail records.

The hospital visitor’s SUV also was found, according to authorities.
