A woman died shortly after a person found her unresponsive in the surf and pulled her out of the water at Edisto Beach on Monday afternoon, Colleton County Fire-Rescue Chief Barry McRoy confirmed.

Around 3 p.m. Monday, a slew of agencies were dispatched to the 800 block of Palmetto Boulevard in response to a report of a drowning. McRoy said the swimmer was in her mid-20s and was seen floating in the surf.

According to a town news release, a “good Samaritan” pulled the woman from the water, and by the time first responders arrived they found a nurse providing care to the unresponsive woman.

The Colleton County Coroner’s Office and Edisto Beach Police Department are investigating the death.

On Tuesday afternoon, Colleton County Coroner Richard M. Harvey’s office said he was not releasing any additional information “at this time.” Harvey was not immediately reachable for comment.

As of Tuesday afternoon, neither the Edisto Beach Mayor Crawford Moore nor the Edisto Beach Police Chief Daniel Seyle immediately responded to request for comment.
