A taco bowl and soups, including Campbell’s and a Meijer brand, might have wood

The latest public health alert from the USDA doubles as the latest not-food-in-your-food episode: There might be wood in the cilantro used for a taco bowl and various soups.

Brands involved include U.S. soup colossus Campbell’s and Crafted Market, a Meijer store brand.

Though the USDA-Food Safety Inspection Service alert says the affected products went to institutional (which can mean hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation facilities, schools, jails, prisons) and retail places in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Michigan, the agency “anticipates that other products may be added, which could result in nationwide impacts.”

A Campbell’s spokesperson emailed the Miami Herald to clarify that the “retail places” meant restaurants and none of the Campbell’s products were of the canned variety.

Most of the soups’ packaging carried instructions to keep the soups frozen until ready to use. The Crafted Market soup instructed users to keep the soup refrigerated.

“The problem was discovered when an FSIS establishment notified FSIS that an FDA-regulated ingredient was recalled for foreign material,” the public health alert said.

According to the USDA establishment number for all but the Crafted Market soup, P-17644, the soups were made at Request Foods in Holland, Michigan. The Crafted Market soup came from Victory’s Kitchen in Toronto.
