Date set for election to fill Hilton Head council seat

A special election to replace Lee Edwards, who announced his resignation from the Hilton Head Island Town Council, has been set for May 3.

Edwards resigned Feb. 8 from the Ward 3 seat on council, which includes the Spanish Wells, Wexford, Long Cove Club, Indigo Run, Point Comfort and Shipyard Plantation areas. He plans to serve until a successor is elected to serve the remaining of his term, which ends in December.

Whoever wins the special election would face election again in November to serve a new four-year term.

The filing period for the nonpartisan election opens at noon Feb. 26 and will close at 4:30 p.m. March 7. Candidates can file a statement of candidacy at Town Hall, One Town Center Court, between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. weekdays. The filing fee is $35.

To obtain a candidacy form, go to Town Hall or to www.hiltonheadislandsc.gov.

For candidacy questions, contact the town records administrator at 843-341-4604.

For election questions, call the Beaufort County election office at 843-255-6900.
