Update: Jeb Bush to visit Hilton Head on Saturday
Republican presidential hopeful Jeb Bush will make his first local campaign stop Saturday afternoon on Hilton Head Island.
The former Florida governor will speak at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Hilton Head Marriott Resort & Spa at 1 Hotel Circle in Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort.
Tickets to the event are free and doors will open at 4 p.m. To register for a ticket, go to http://bit.ly/1Rfy7Ri. All bags will be subject to inspection upon entry and within the event space.
Bush is among the last remaining presidential hopefuls to make stops in Beaufort County ahead of the "First in the South" primary next month. Hillary Clinton and Ben Carson are the only other high-profile candidates who have not yet campaigned here.
Bush's only cameo on Hilton Head so far came during Republican frontrunner Donald Trump's stop last week, but it was as the butt of a dozen vicious jokes about Bush's standing in the polls.
In South Carolina, Bush lands in fifth place in the latest Wintrhop Poll, issued early last month. Nine percent of likely Republican primary voters said they would support Bush in that poll -- 15 points behind Trump's commanding lead in the Palmetto State.
'First in the South' primary
South Carolina's "First in the South" presidential primary on Feb. 20 will be among the first three in the country, behind New Hampshire and the Iowa caucuses.
Applications are available now to vote absentee in the election.
The deadline to register to vote in the primary is Jan. 20.
Primary polls throughout Beaufort County will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Feb. 20.
