Bluffton businessman plans to run for Beaufort County Council seat
Bluffton businessman Mike Covert announced Thursday his intent to run for the District 7 Beaufort County Council seat currently held by Councilwoman Cynthia Bensch.
Bensch entered the Bluffton mayoral race earlier this month and must vacate her County Council seat if elected.
She is incumbent Mayor Lisa Sulka's only challenger in that race.
Bensch's term ends next year, and Covert said he will run for her seat regardless of whether she wins the Bluffton mayoral election.
Covert, 48, is the owner of local heating and air conditioning service company Covert Aire.
If elected, Covert said he plans to focus on policies that help preserve the May River, bolster local infrastructure, and make the county more business friendly.
He also said he wants to end the culture of divisiveness on the County Council.
