Steve DeSimone, who served on the Hilton Head Town Council from 1995 to 2002 is rejoining the group after a 22 year hiatus. He defeated opponent Amy Fee for the Ward 3 seat garnering 2,038 votes or 57.6%. Fee received 1,470 votes or 41.5%, according to the unofficial count from around 12:10 a.m. Wednesday.
The Ward 3 seat on the council represents residents from the mid-island area, including south of Broad Creek to Coligny Beach. David Ames, Mayor Pro-Tem and Ward 3 council member, confirmed in March that he would not be running again for town council.
DeSimone served currently sits on the town’s Board of Zoning Appeals. He moved to Hilton Head in 1986 to work as an assistant engineer with the town government, which was newly-organized at the time.
Throughout the campaign, the candidates shared their thoughts of some of the most pressing issues facing the town, from the U.S. 278 Corridor Project to public safety on the island. Greater council transparency and island preservation were among both of their priorities throughout the campaign.
Incumbent Alex Brown of Ward 1, and newcomer Melinda Tunner of Ward 6, will join DeSimone on the town council adding new faces to the seven-member governing body.
