Weston Newton earns way onto list of Republican incumbents reelected to SC House
State Rep. Weston Newton, the Republican incumbent, secured his seat as the District 120 legislator for the South Carolina House of Representatives, joining three other local house winners, according to unofficial results. Newton received 14,373 votes, or 67.6%, defeating Kate Creech, who received 6.849 votes, or 32.2%, per the unofficial tally from 12:10 a.m. Wednesday.
District 120 includes the area south of the Broad River in parts of Beaufort and Jasper Counties, including Bluffton.
In 2020 and 2022, Newton ran unopposed. In 2018, he received 64.1% of votes, topping Ryan Martz.
Newton has served as the District 120 representative since 2013 after serving as Chairman for the Beaufort County Council. He serves as Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and previously chaired the House Legislative Oversight Committee. Newton has also practiced law for more than 25 years as a partner at Jones, Simpson & Newton, P.A in Bluffton.
His top three priorities if reelected, he said leading up the election, would be making the government more transparent and efficient, fighting to make District 120 voices heard in Columbia and increasing public safety.
Creech’s campaign was centered around reproductive and LGBTQ+ rights, common sense gun reform, affordable housing solutions, climate-conscious development and intellectual freedom.
Tonight, three other Republican representatives were reelected to the State House, including Jeff Bradley, District 123, Shannon Erickson, District 124, and Bill Herbkersman, District 118.
The State House consists of 124 part-time citizen legislators elected every two years to represent the state’s districts, including 87 Republicans, 35 Democrats and two vacancies, prior to Election Day results. The General Assembly’s annual session will begin on the second Tuesday in January and runs through the second Thursday in May.
