Mayor David Bennett calls for donations to sewer fund

Hilton Head Island Mayor David Bennett is calling for donations to the Community Foundation of Lowcountry for the town's new sanitary sewer service effort.

The foundation's Sewer Access For Everyone program, known as Project SAFE, helps connect medium- and low-income families to public service district sewer lines.

The foundation hopes to raise $3 million to assist families over the next five years alongside the town's $3.5 million commitment to extend sewer to every island resident by 2020, Bennett said.

"For anyone considering year-end donations for tax purposes or otherwise, consider making them payable to the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry, and specifically donated to Project SAFE," he said. "It'd be nice to get those guys off to a good start in their efforts."
