Hilton Head to build new public pickleball courts. Here’s where
Hilton Head officials have decided building new pickleball courts would be a net gain for the island.
Town staff have submitted plans for a new pickleball facility in Crossings Park with 20 pickleball courts, a clubhouse building and parking spaces.
The project will be reviewed by the Planning Commission at a public hearing Wednesday afternoon.
The project is being built to address a growing demand for pickleball for both residents and visitors, according to a staff report.
Residents concerned about noise
Some residents of Palmetto Bay Villas, the residential condo community adjacent to the site, have voiced concerns about noise and light pollution. The “pop” of a pickleball paddle hitting a ball can reach 70 decibels from 100 feet away.
Palmetto Bay Villas resident Beth Petro spoke at a public hearing for the project on Nov. 19, claiming residents did not receive notification of the public hearing.
She said residents are “not against” the pickleball courts but hope to have their concerns taken into consideration.
In response, town staff met with residents and adjusted the designs to address concerns.
According to the staff report, sound attenuation matting will be installed along the shared boundary between the project site and the condo community. Low-profile, fully-shielded lighting fixtures will be used to reduce glare and prevent light spill. The facility is expected to operate from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
