Beaufort County selects law firm to conduct audit of expenditures under Greenway
The Beaufort County council selected Greenville-based law firm, Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd, to conduct their audits of county spending under former administrator Greenway. According to the law firm’s website, their primary area of expertise is providing “a wide array of legal services to banks and other depository institutions, finance companies, investment banking firms and other financial service providers.” The website also touts the firm’s expertise in issues of public financing by government bodies.
While officials have not revealed exactly what they’ll be looking for, we do know they will be looking at purchases and contracts approved by the county since January 1. They’ll also review the county’s procurement code and purchase card systems to determine if there are needed updates or revisions.
The audits come in the wake of Greenway’s firing by council and the ongoing criminal misconduct investigation of Greenway by a joint task force of the 1st and 14th Solicitor’s offices.
The firm will receive $350,000 for their work. Funding will come out of the county’s general fund contingencies.
“Every County Council member is focused on gathering all the necessary information and working together to make the most informed decisions to correct these problems, strengthen county policies and move forward,” said Chairman Joseph Passiment in a county press release. “It will take time but we will make it happen.”
