A St. Helena Island resident plans to challenge incumbent Nancy Mace of Charleston for the Republican nomination to run for the 1st Congressional District seat in the 2024 election.

Austin Anderson says he chose Feb. 14 to announce his candidacy because his brother died of a drug overdose on that day 15 years ago.

Anderson, a 27-year-old Uber driver, is advocating positions that he hopes unites the populist left and populist right “in order to achieve political unity to affect some degree of change,” he said.

Anderson describes himself as a gay, anti-establishment Republican who is married to a Russian immigrant. He has a degree, he says, in international studies with a focus on Eurasia.

His platform has five main points:

Peace in Ukraine. Anderson calls it a senseless war that is spiraling out of control.

Abolishing the Federal Reserve System, or central bank, created in 1913.

Investigating those he says were responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic and those who developed and administrated the Covid vaccines, which Anderson calls “poison shots.”

Abolishing the Food and Drug Administration, Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and breaking up the American Medication Association to create more competition and treatments from abroad.

Publicly condemning those who have participated in what Anderson describes as “the subversive activities of the World Economic Forum.”

In November, Mace defeated Democrat Dr. Annie Andrews to win a second term after beating Trump-endorsed Katie Arrington in the June primary. The next congressional election is Nov. 5, 2024.
